Is it Time to Hold a Wake....

for Gwen, Rhys, PC Andy, Rhiannon and Johnny, Mica and David?

I say yes. And you can't bury characters without a good eulogy.

So feel free to stand up in front of the crowd and leave your best memories of one or all of these characters.
The eulogies can contain 'truth' but nothing overtly nasty please, (you have AGA for that). After all, you shouldn't speak ill of the dead

_
I'll start with a little something about PC Andy:

Oh Andy, we hardly knew you. I thought I did until you morphed into some strange homophobic character in CoE.
You were so adorable and sweet and I did like that you kicked some ass in CoE. But those final remarks?
Not buying them. Anyone who wasn't fazed by spooky-dos, wouldn't care about someone's sexual orientation.
Some horrible outside influence took you over and made you say those things.
I forgive you; you are not responsible for acting out of character.
Rest well.

A toast to Rhys!

::lights candles::

Rhys, you long-suffering lovable lump, you. You didn't deserve to be a Torchwood widow. You were always good for a laugh, you kept things real, down-to-earth. While Gwen and the team battle against cyberwomen, you're having a pint and a curry with Dav, leaving a message for Gwen to video Wife Swap. Sorry you probably never got to see that episode. You do kick ass with a chainsaw, though. And you'll be a great dad. ::raises a pint in honor of Rhys::

(PS: I will never understand RTD. If you have something that seems to be working, why would you change the formula SO drastically and SO quickly? I don't get it.)

Yeah Rhys was the overlooked diamond in the rough, wasn't he? I wish we would have gotten to see him more in the show. But I suppose if S4 were to be Cardiff, he be reduced to diaper changing and cleaning baby spit up as the 'comedy' part of the show, instead of a smart, forceful guy.

Johnny, I have to admit we had our rocky moments, like when I first saw you talking to your brother in law. Or your questionable ways of making a quick buck. But ultimately... well, ultimately your family are the most important people for you. You love them and would do everything for them, no matter your differences, no questions asked. I can only admire that. We need more people who think like you in that regard.

Johnny, we really hardly knew you. I think down inside you had a good heart, but acted the way you did because you didn't know how else to react to Ianto. I would have like to have seen you and Ianto and Rhys become friends...going to the pub, watching football together, getting loaded.

Kathy Swanson,

You only appeared in one ep. It should have been many more. You charmed me with your sarcasm, no-nonsense attitude and bitchin' hair. Plus, you humiliated Jack in front of your entire team of long-suffering Cardif PCs, but still came through with the vital information to save Gwen.

Much like Julie Whitner from Season 4 House, you deserved better than to be an easily discarded, temporary foil to the hero.

I totally forgot about her. Though she lives on in several fan fictions! Yeah, she won't be coming to America.

Don't know who to pick - I loved Kathy and wanted her to come back, I loved Myfawnwy and her funny little feet, loved the way Cardiff itself became a beloved member of the cast. 1890s Torchwood, 1917 Torchwood.. all the stories they never got to tell.

[identity profile] aviv-b.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah Myfanwy and Janet - to quote RTD - oh, they're dead! So now you want me to invest in more characters so you can yank me around emotionally. Sorry bud, if I want my emotions manipulated - I'LL CALL MY MOTHER!

[identity profile] eandh99.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
CoE is like a textbook for emotional manipulation - the plot doesn't make any sense, it's just button-pushing - cry here NOW! I'd already given up on DW before CoE, can't wait to see if Moffat gets us back to the brilliance that was The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.

Moffat! Me too! I hope he rescues DW from the angstfest its been the last two seasons. Mediocre stories, silly plots, and yes, button pushing emotions.

Ditto TW. That's probably why as much as I like Ianto, I was absolutely dry eyed during the BIG death scene. My cheap emotion button was apparently manfunctioning that evening (and I cry during Hallmark commercials).

As I have said elsewhere - the plotting in CoE was so obvious RTD might as well have used actual anvils. The moment Ianto and Jack had that laboured and ludicrously out of character "couple" conversation, I knew Ianto was doomed.

Thinking of the children

Mica & David:

You had Ianto Jones for an uncle, therefore your chances to have been awesome and kickass were damn good. Also, you could have had ponies.

Janet:

It wasn't fair that you blew up in the Hub. Yeah, so you were a Weevil and attacked humans. Hell, you weren't from around there, and were basically inside a cell all the time so you couldn't learn much about how to work with humans all that well.

Mica and David - they never will learn how awesome their Uncle was.
