Cool! I've been to Monument Valley several times my self. But i didn't see the snake hole (sulk). Nor did I have as intimate an experience with the people there.
On the hike to the arch, we camped on our horse packer's ranch the first night - no running water either. He, his wife and his cousins handled the pack horses. His grandfather who is one of the last fully trained shamans came and blessed us in the family hogan. I was a little concerned when the guide translated part of what his grandfather had said...that this was the same blessing he gives the boys from the reservation before they go to Iraq.
The funniest thing is that the group I went with (which is the same group organizing the raft trip) is pretty granola. So the lead guide gives us a little lecture about going into the wilderness on its own terms, no cell phones etc. Frankly, I don't care how many waivers you have your clients sign, a guide not taking a cell where there is service is opening yourself for a lawsuit if someone gets injured and rescue is delayed due to lack of communication devices.
Anyway, the Navajo horse packer listens respectfully to her speech (and they've known each other for years, so this is meant as teasing) and says,"That's fine for you white woman (as he whips out his cell) but I have valuable horses and I go nowhere without my phone. Here's a guy with no running water and very minimal electricity on his property, but he's got a phone in case of emergency.
Other interesting film locations I've seen If you go to Arches National Park one of the arches was used as a place where the young Indy finds treasure (I think, its been awhile). And at Tikal in Guatemala there's a view from the top of a pyramid that was used in the Return of the Jedi as the planet Endor.
