FREDDIE & ELOISE

The owner of these cats died unexpectantly and there isn't any family to take them. Some friends are taking care of the cats, but this is a temporary fix at best.

They are around 10 years old, and don't have any health problems. They are good natured and friendly. Please boost the signal and if anyone is interested they can PM me.

Here are some pictures, I know they aren't the greatest but you can see they are pretty chill cats:

Anyone who reads my journal knows this already. But this week, its been certified by the voters at [livejournal.com profile] shutter_cats.  The irony is that the world's sweetest kitty won for "If Looks Could Kill."

And if you follow my entries you've seen the picture - but now its an official winner:

Go Ida! (I am such a stage Meowmy).

Of all the places I visited on my trip to Belgium and Holland, the most most moving and disturbing was the day was spend in the Ypres Salient. Most Americans (myself included) are woefully ignorant about the details of the fighting during WWI. We've heard about trench warfare and mustard gas, but really don't have a good understanding of where the battles were fought, and how many died.  (I was much better prepared emotionally for the Anne Frank House in Holland, having more intimate knowledge of the Holocaust in general and having read her book several times).

We spent the day visiting memorials and cemeteries for soldiers killed in this area - mostly from the British Commonwealth, but also one German Cemetery as well. I finally understand why the men killed in WWI are called the Lost Generation in Britain.

Here's a brief description of the video I made of my visit there:

The first pictures are from Essex Farm Cemetery where Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae of the Canadian Army Medical Corps wrote the poem In Flanders Fields in May 1915. The dimly lit image from the inside of a medical bunker.

The next images are from Langemark Cemetery which is the only remaining German/Central Powers cemetery. There are almost 25,000 coffins buried in a mass grave along with about 3,000 graves of student volunteers and other individual graves totaling 44,000+ burials in all.

A fallen soldier's medal left at a guest house by a visitor from Australia.

The base of a monument to Georges Guynemer, French flying ace. He shot down over 50 enemy planes.

The next image is at St. Julien's Cemetery in honor of Canadian soldiers.

This is followed by a series of images from Tyn Cot Cemetery near Passendale. This is the largest cemetery to British war dead in the world. I totally lost it at this point. It's almost too much to comprehend. Almost 12,000 individual graves - those who were known often have their country (e.g. maple leave for Canada) or regimental symbols on their headstones. But most of the bodies are unidentified - 8,300+ are inscribed with "known unto G-d."

And then there is the Memorial to the Missing - over 34,000 names of British Commonwealth soldiers whose remains are still missing - or are in some of the unidentified graves. Plaque after plaque arranged by regiment.  But you can see the disparity - many bodies have never been found - over 90,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers remain missing, a small fraction of which are in the unidentified graves.

The final image is the top of the statue to Georges Guynemer. He was shot down in 1917 not far from where this monument stands. Neither his body nor his plane have been found.

We also visited a site that still had some of the original trenches, as well as bomb shells, display cases full of medals that have been found in the area, and other gruesome remnants of war.

I didn't get a good picture of the Menin Gate in Grote, which also has names of missing British & Commonwealth soldiers  engraved on it.  Every night, 365 days a year, someone comes out at 20:00 and plays "The Last Post" (what we Americans call taps) at the gate. The people of Grote haven't forgotten the sacrifices made by their British allies.

It was a very difficult day, but an important one.

I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] evalentine99

Here are the 'rules':

Go to page 7 or 77 of your latest work. Read down to the seventh line and then post online the next seven lines or sentences. Then head off and tag seven more writers.

There's just one small problem. I got nothin'. Meaning nothing 7 pages long let alone 77 pages long.

So instead I counted off my vacation pictures I've been working on to number 77 and then number 154 etc. They aren't my best - but here's what came up:
Two Weeks in Belgium & Holland in Eight Random Pictures

Well here's a cheerful start
The Death of Marat - from the Royal Museum of Fine Art

Brussels - making artisan chocolates - yum!

St. Julien Memorial - to Canadian Soldiers killed in the 2nd Battle of Ypres

Beach on the drive to Zeeland

Keukenhof Gardens

Red light district of Amsterdam

Ark of the Great Synagogue in Amsterdam (now a museum)

Amsterdam - Bicycle in the canal.

There you have it - two weeks of pics.
Not tagging anyone - cause I think my flist has all been tagged already.
Time to go out to see the Gay Pride Parade - I have some friends at the beginning of the parade this year - so I want to get pics of them at least.

This time I can spread the blame around. Not only do I still blame [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted for getting me started, but [livejournal.com profile] iantojjackh joined in the fun and demanded I add Jack to the illustration for Cardiff Alien Care & Control, because Jack would certainly want to fly with the bunnies.

So here's Jack in his WWII RAF plane (don't ask me what type it is) wearing his RAF uniform helping to teach the bunnies to fly,(as if Cardiff weren't dangerous enough when Jack's driving).

More Flying Lessons

You know, I only have 400+ photos from my vacation I should be working on. Not to mention two more stories for love_bingo that I have to finish in the next two weeks.
aviv_b_artwork: (Default)
This is all [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted 's fault.  We had an exchange in the comments of my fic, Cardiff Alien Care & Control, about Myfanwy and the bunnies. She was very concerned that Myfanwy would try to teach the bunnies to fly. I posited that Tosh could build them little planes to fly around in. She said she was having visions of them zooming around the Hub.

I took that as a challenge.

Now if anybody has a good shot of the interior of the Hub - I'd sure like to have it for future photoshopping fun. I couldn't find anything that would work. So I used my old standby pic and with the magic of technology I give you

Flying Lessons

(Yes, some-bunny is feeling a bit silly tonight).

Writing
I discovered something pretty nice tonight. I was over on my Media Fire account (where I have story pdfs) and Ianto's Journey has 1,386 downloads. The last download was December 27th of 2011.  I never would have imagined that people would still be reading the story. (Treachery is running a very distant second place with 328 downloads).  Kind of makes me want to write something BIG, because its been drabble city around here lately.

Truth is, I have been writing more than just drabbles! I signed up for Classic TW Big Bang - though it's only a mini-bang for me. Still at 9,000+ words, its been a bit of work. First draft is finished, but it needs some polish and tightening up and a little fact checking. Stories won't be posting until mid/end of February, which will work out fine.  I'd like to get something written for Redisourcolor - so I'm selfishly hoping there aren't enough posts for voting next Thursday because making that deadline will be nearly impossible.

Ida
Ida has been upset with me lately. We had a bit of an ear cleaning disaster http://cathealth.livejournal.com/2364801.html  last week and then she found out I was on some other cat communities bragging about Teddy being a very smart cat.  So she made me promise to show you that she is also a smart kitty.

Ida always helps me with the Sunday crossword puzzle - mostly by laying on it and trying to chew on the pen. But sometimes she works on the easy one all by herself.

Just some new pics here of my furkids. I worked from home today - I'm in charge of evaluating some new vendors for my employer and the proposals are massive so I needed some uninterrupted time to read them through.  Teddy and Ida helped, but their criteria were a bit cat-centric.

Teddy doesn't care if the cost estimates are soft, just so long as the binders are as well.

And Ida, bless her furry little feet, doesn't get that 'that word doesn't mean what you think it means.'

I'm Back!

Had a great time rafting! I'm posting just a few pics from the trip - I'll have a few more later. The weather was in the 80s during the day and 60s at night. Except for the first night, I didn't put up a tent, just slept under the stars which is one of my most favorite things to do.

I'm going back to work tomorrow, then off for Rosh HaShanah on Thursday and Friday.  So I'm trying to catch up on laundry, mail, LJ, and everything else tonight. Ida and Teddy are a bit clingy but we had some fun today and they're napping right now.

I'm leaving town today for a week of white water rafting with my Wild Women friends. There will be twelve of us and it should be a lot of fun.
This year we'll be on the San Juan River starting around Bluff, Utah. I'm flying into Grand Junction and then catching a ride with two friends down to Bluff. I've hiked in this area before, but not rafted, so I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be rainy and in the high 60s this week in Chicago - mid 80s and sunny in Utah. Yay!  And no work. Yay! And no internet/phone/TV. Uh....Yay!  It's like detox for me, LOL.

In other news, there's a Memorial for my friend Catherine here in Chicago this week - unfortunately I won't be able to attend. I wanted to let you know that everyone's donations came to just under $200 - so I will be making a paypal donation in that amount this month (thank goodness its a three check month - we get paid every two weeks so twice a year we get an 'extra' check).  Thank you so much for all of your donations to her rescue.

Finally, my writing has tapered off a bit. I think MD was a big distraction and I'm hoping to get focused back into TW writing when I return. I've also been working on an outline for an original work of fiction - a mystery based around working in an office. I was going to do something specific to my profession, but I think it would be easier to start with something more general - working title is "I Could Just Kill that Boss." Everyone can relate to that. (And honestly, not related to my own boss, cause he's one of the good ones).

Here's a picture of the river at Bluff I took in '09 on my way to hike Navajo Mountain to  Rainbow Bridge.

And here's a map of South Eastern Utah an area I know very well. At the bottom right corner you'll see Bluff Utah - almost at the Arizona border. We'll be rafting from there to Mexican Hat. We'll be floating a lot of the way though there a couple of sections of class III rapids to keep life interesting. Hope to see some interesting wildlife, and rock art and petroglyphs.

As I looked at this map, there isn't any place haven't been to multiple times! Some day, I'll write up a story about the flash flood on Cedar Mesa.  The one the guides with this group make me tell every year.  The moral is - listen to your guides except when their instructions will get you killed. Then speak up. Yeah, it was pretty scary

I have video as well - some of the files are quite large so I'll need a day or so for those.
FYI - I read on a com that SyFy is interested in viewer reaction to Gareth in Warehouse 13. So if you saw and liked, please send a nice email to them letting them know how much you enjoyed and how much you'd love to see a spin-off with him in it. (And of course, keep it polite, positive and enthusiastic).

Is it me, or does Gareth get younger looking every year.

Kai looking nice and buff.

Teddy had his teeth cleaned today. I gave him a sedative before he went in (yes the vet knows this and adjusts the anesthesia accordingly) and I got him to the vet with very little fuss. He got through the cleaning just fine, no bad teeth or gum problems.

I've always been told that he is 'difficult' when he's in recovery. My cat difficult? Maybe a little nippy, or a hiss or two, but no big deal, right?

I asked if I could assist getting him back into his carrier and for once they said yes. Well, they opened his enclosure and  there was Teddy. Spitting! Hissing! Attacking! Flailing! Yikes! Eyes dilated, Ears pinned flat! My cat was possessed by a Tasmanian Devil! There was no way to touch him without getting mauled. I kept talking to him and he calmed a bit but anytime we got near him, the ears went back, the hissing and swiping started up again.

The very smart vet tech decided to put the carrier in the cage and he immediately climbed back in. He hissed several times at me, I just kept talking to him. By the time I paid my bill, he was rubbing against the carrier door so he could mark me.

Ida hissed at him a few times when he got home. Teddy was calm and walked through the whole house to just make sure nothing had changed in his absence. Then he rolled on his back for a nice chin rub, followed by demands for dinner.

Here he is less than five minutes after we got home:

What you looking at me like that for?

I didn't want him to get too wound up tonight, but we did play a little fetch. A lot less than Teddy would have preferred.

No more ball? But I want to play moar, Meowmy.

That's my Teddy Boo. 90% sweet and 10% purr evil, LOL.

OMG it was hot here yesterday. Like 97 degrees. Can you say hot? My parents came over and we had a belated Father's Day celebration. I was in Scotland on the 'official' day, but hey I did call. I am the GOOD child, LOL. I was supposed to go over to their house but they decided to come over (much to my surprise - they aren't overly fond of Teddy and Ida). Teddy actually slept on Dad's lap. And I didn't get a picture of this historic moment of Teddy behaving and my father not trying to stay as far away from him as possible. Meh.

Speaking of Scotland - of course we saw castles, and churches and battlefields - but really, the squee moment for me was visiting a farm that still herds sheep the old fashioned way:

The only problem was that all the dogs wanted to get in on the action.

Feeding the baby lambs, squee!!

Enjoying a little malt wisky at a distillery.

Ok, one castle cause you asked so nicely.

I'm seeing a play with my bff this evening and going to a picnic tomorrow out in the burbs. Today - going to finally get my bike out and get it in order (notice I didn't say I'd actually ride it) and then I am going to hang out this afternoon and work a bit on my trip pics.

And of course don't forget to read and vote in round 18 Redisourcolor story contest: http://redisourcolor.livejournal.com/50319.html   Voting ends Sunday, July 3rd 2011, 2300 EST.

Ida and Teddy got a lovely Scratch & Climb toy from their Aunty D just before Christmas. With being sick over Christmas weekend and really busy between Christmas and New Years, I finally got time to assemble it today for them.

A good time was had by all. (As always, click the picture to bigify).

Thank you and head bumps to our Aunty D!
