A couple of months ago my friend D lost her cat Elijah who she had for 17+ years.  He was a very good kitty, but had some serious medical problems his last few years.  She was able to keep him in remarkably good physical and mental health up until the very end. Naturally she was devastated when the time came, but she let him go peacefully when he was ready. (OK takes a break to wipe eyes).

A few years prior to this she had adopted another cat named Ozzie. He is a very sweet boy and was always happy to let Elijah be the boss. And while Elijah could be a bit grouchy at times, Ozzie just adored him. So while D didn't want to get another cat right away, Ozzie clearly needed a new kitty friend.

After several experiences with crazy kitty shelter people she went to one of my favorite shelters - Felines Inc in Chicago. She was looking for another male cat, but you cat people know how it is, you don't pick the cat, the cat picks you. She adopted a sweet three year old girl she's named Ruby Tuesday. (I bet you can't guess on what day of the week she was adopted).  Along with another friend, I went to visit her last night.

Ozzie has been pretty good about the new kitty. He has hissed once in a while but there hasn't been any screaming cat fights. He was sitting near her when I arrived and didn't seem too upset by her presence.  He did do a little tail slapping and growling toward the end of the evening when we were clearly giving way too much attention to the newest addition. Its hard to be a big brother! But I think they are going to end up being very good friends.

She was a little shy at first, but by the end of the evening she really came out of her shell.  The funniest thing happened while eating dinner. D mentioned that she was concerned that Ruby hadn't meowed since she came home (and apparently she screamed in the car all the way home from the shelter).  Just as she's finishing saying this a little meow came from under the table. It was Ruby!

She got some nice butt scratches from her Auntie R and me and she purred and kneaded and was very relaxed and happy.   You can click on any pictures you want to enlarge.
