By now, I'm sure you've heard that the leaders of the Catholic Church have taken the position that the priest pedophile scandal is really a 'homosexual' scandal rather than child abuse. Since they claim that most of the victims were past puberty, then no child molestation took place. And besides, its the kids' faults

Uh..No...FAIL! Sexual orientation has nothing to do with this and regardless of their age or sexual maturity the children are victims.  That hasn't played out too well for church officials so now they resort to the classic fall back position.

THE JEWS DID IT!

That's right your friendly neighborhood Jew set the whole thing up. Taking off time from our world-wide conspiracy of controlling the banks and the stock markets, pausing from using the blood of Christian babies to bake matzoh, we Jews have managed to get these men to molest children. We made them do it!

We are multi-tasking mavens, aren't we?

From the Salon Blog: http://open.salon.com/blog/judy_mandelbaum/2010/04/12/chutzpah_bishop_blames_the_jews_for_pedophile_scandal

Retired Bishop Giacomo Babini of the Italian town of Grosseto told the Catholic Pontifex website that the Catholic pedophile scandal is being orchestrated by the “eternal enemies of Catholicism, namely the freemasons and the Jews, whose mutual entanglements are not always easy to see through. … I think that it is primarily a Zionist attack, in view of its power and refinement. They do not want the church, they are its natural enemies. Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God-killers.”

But wait there's more:

“The Holocaust was a disgrace for all of humanity,” the good bishop told the world, “but now we have to look at it without rhetoric and with open eyes. Don’t believe that Hitler was merely crazy. The truth is that the Nazis’ criminal fury was provoked by the Jews’ economic embezzlement, by which they choked the German economy.” He concluded that the Jews’ “guilt is graver than what Christ predicted would happen to them, saying ‘do not cry for me, but for your own children.’”

Sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. What next? Really, who are you going to target next?  The Muslims? The Atheists? The Tooth Fairy?

Enough is enough! It's time for you all to put your big-boy pants on and take responsibility for your actions.  For the child molestations, for the hiding of the molestations, for your failure to act to defrock child-molesting members of your clergy, for the continuing demonization of the victims, and for your out and out bigotry against gays, Jews and whoever else you decide is a convenient target.

Strange, until about five minutes ago i could have sworn this is 2010, not 1933. We must ahve slipped through the Rift without noticing. :S

Over here some church guy from Bavaria blamed the Sexual Revolution for getting all those priests so hot and bothered, they just couldn't help themselves. But he still didn't want to rethink the whole celibacy issue.

Personally I agree with you that teh Catholic Church should stop graping for excuses, own up the things that obviously went wrong in the organization and make the neccessary changes. Honestly, how hard can it be, if they redirect all the brainpower dedicated to this nonsense and actually get to work?

And of course nobody ever had sex before 1933. Certainly not priests and never, ever the Pope. (Which makes the painting by Titian entitled Pope Paul III and his grandsons really, really confusing).

Don't they see how this is just making it worse. The more they try to cover up the worse it gets. They just need to deal with it. I have no doubt that they will survive this crisis, but I am increasingly doubtful whether they will survive with the respect of many Catholics and non-Catholics intact.

I was upset when the anger over the scandal was compared to the Holocaust, but this is just unacceptable.

People sure had sex before 1933, but the conspiracy theory bullshit he is talking about was particularily popular that year in my country, leading to a political situation, that made the next twelve years unforgettable. A sane, rational person surely wouldn't spout the same nonsense rethoric. I can only hope for this Bishop Babini, that he is getting a little, er, confused in his advancing years and that this is not the official stance of his church on the whole subject. Anything else is too despicable to contemplate.

That's what I don't get. If the Catholic Church came out and said "we are sorry, we made mistakes and we are working on a solution", people would be a lot more sympathetic. Instead they blame everyone who seems like an easy scapegoat and then jump to the next when called on it. So senseless and counterproductive. *shakes head*

Yeah, a little remark that the bishop is really old and not so clear could have covered this one up nicely.

There is not WTF or FAIL in the world for this.

On the other hand, the church is doing an amazing job of blowing themselves to smithereens - which they roundly deserve, the black-hearted motherfuckers.

Funny thing...I've always had enormous respect for the work that the Church (or shall I say the Nuns) have done for the poor and for social justice. But if they dug their graves any deeper they'd be in the bowels of hell.

And with Jews increasingly becoming the target of personal violence around the world - we really don't need this kind of crap.

*headdesk*

It's a poor attempt at misdirection. "Don't look here. Look over there!"

There's been a long and sordid equation between homosexuality and pedophilia - even though studies of pedophiles indicate that most have heterosexual tendencies. So making out that it's the gays is the Catholic churches fallback position.

Don't you know that the Pope and everyone else in the Catholic Church are infallible? I feel sorry for the Catholic congregation, and those priests who can keep it in their pants/robes, who are more than likely just trying to get on with their lives, and follow the teachings of their God - it must knock your confidence in your church when shit like this goes on.

No matter what the age, if there's coercion, exploitation, non-consensuality, then it's abuse.

The Catholic pedophile scandal is being driven by the Catholic pedophiles and those who seek to protect them, and the shocking ways in which they are going about hiding or justifying it; the rest of us right thinking and right feeling people are just outraged at the hypocrisy and vitriol pouring out from the Church. It seems like they're so bloody angry that they got caught, not realising that the act itself is unconscionable.

That's the real shame. I may be naive but I think that as large as these scandals are they represent a small percentage of the clergy. And I really feel for people of the Catholic faith because this has got to be tearing their souls apart.

My BFF at work is a minimally observant Catholic. And she is just heartsick. Her position has always been there was the Church made of of ordinary people and then the Hierarchy and the doctrine and you could love one and ignore the other. Now she's not so sure.

Hey if my Rabbi screws up, either (s)he gets fired or I join another shul. Been there, done that. So my faith is never put to the test by one person's actions. And no one is infallible. No one. Not in my world

But the problem with any large, powerful organization, is that its easy to lose site of the goal and become a self-protecting bureaucracy whose only goal is self-perpetuation. And the Catholic Church has done this in spades.

The homophobia I expected - they've done it before, repeatedly and recently so it didn't surprise me.

The anti-semitism? I boggle - I thought they knew better than to be that openly anti-semitic, especially considering the church's history!

I just look at this and I can't think of a coherent response. There just ISN'T one. There can't be one. It is just beyond imagining that anyone with even an ounce of sense would say something so grossly awful

And the best part...first the Church denied he gave the interview. Then they tried to white-wash it. Hey I'd be Ok - with what Shahar Amar suggested - so sorry, the bishop is a little fuzzy in his old age....

They don't learn do they? Its not the lie, ITS THE MF COVERUP. Most of these incidents happened years ago - so it would be easy, easy , easy to say, yeah, bad things happened, we didn't know, we're so shocked, and clean up the mess.

But no, they defend child rape. And blame gays. And say that Jews hate G-d. POP! - There goes my head again.

I think ti's part of ther derail tactic.

Get someone high profile enough to be listened to but distant enough to repudiate to say something outrageous to disctract the media. Then come in quickly with damage control "it's not our fault what these silly fools say" and hope that the focus has shifted.

yes, it's pathetic and not workingt - but this is the church that though forgiving the Beatles (sure the surviving Beatles REALLY care about that) would be a sufficient distraction

Honestly I almost want to send them a PR professional - because they are screwing this up so horrendously badly that I almost feel bad for them

The Beatles - yes that was so funny that it came out during this whole thing. And not only do the Beatles not care, do they really think that those of who are outraged are going to placated by this?

I guess they were hoping it would go something like this:

Aviv_b: Wow Sparky, didja see about the Beatles? Now if those stupid gays and G-d killing Jews would just STFU, everything would be fine! (Head explodes again).

Sparky: Yeah cool. The Church rocks, doesn't it? And who cares about deviants and heretics anyway! (Sparky's head explodes).

I need a drink and its only 9 AM here.

Isn't it the Christians that do that "wine is the blood of Christ" deal?
