Title: They're Outta This World!
Written for [info]tw100Challenge #190 - Moon
Rating: G
Characters: Jack, Owen, Gwen
Disclaimer: Not mine; Aunty B's and RTD's
Summary:
Since Jack is officially an American in S4 (at least according to all the press releases) we must embrace all things American. No? Ok, maybe just this one.

A/N:  Inspired by [info]xrai_namere
's drabble:  Man on the Moon:  http://community.livejournal.com/tw100/513440.html

“Oi, there are not people living on the moon,” Owen interrupted as Jack’s story got more and more outlandish.

“Yes there are, I visited several times including once with the Doctor. There’s a highly developed civilization on the moon.”

Gwen wasn’t sure whether Jack was being serious or having one off on them. “So, tell us about something unique and wonderful that these moon people have invented.”

Jack snorted. “Well, they have the best baked goods anywhere in the galaxy.”

Seeing the looks on everyone’s faces, Jack realized they knew little about American culture. “What? You’ve never heard of MoonPies?”

In case you have never seen a MoonPie - they are a large marshmallow filled cookie/cake treat.

And the official slogan of MoonPies:

Ha ha, very funny. By the way, I love MoonPies. Haven't had any for years, though, and now I'm suddenly craving one LOL.

Me neither - but they were a big treat long ago. I think they may be more popular in the southern US.

That...I don't even...bwahaha! I don't even know if we have MoonPies around these parts of America, though I've had them.

Speaking of....

Jack is...American? Wow. Well. That's our one claim to fame, I guess. He's obviously from the north, too. Maybe he's a good New England boy. *Being ridiculous and can only hope*

Look! You can buy them online:

Jack is definitely midwestern. Probably one town over from Smallville. I wonder if anyone has ever written a Torchwood/Smallville crossover?

Again...I love Jack's propensity for tall tales, and the possibility that at any minute he might be telling the truth or be full of shit. Nice punch-line as well.

Ooh, I have to see if I can find these here in New England. There are actually quite a lot of Smallville/Torchwood crossovers. Unfortunately I've only ever seen them on fanfic.net so... yeah...

Glad I inspired you! This was cute! (If Jack were poster boy for these I'd buy them by the truckloads, even though I hate marshmallows).

I can't remember if they are actually marshmallow or some type of gooey creme filling. It been many years since I've had one. You can get them on line if you're really curious.

I may have to check out those cross overs - even though ff.net stories can be great to really awful

It says marshmallow.

Would there have to be a "RC Cola boy" in an American version?

Date: 2011-03-23 09:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aviv-b.livejournal.com
of course, cause nothing goes with RC Cola (shudder) like a MoonPie.

I have a strange love/hate relationship with marshmallows. I love them, but I always eat more than I should and get a tummy ache.

Ah that's the problem. I eat them rarely, but then in large quantities.

I don't know for sure if they're a Commonwealth thing or merely a Canadian thing, but it's possible British readers would be familiar with Wagon Wheels:

I can't compare them properly, having never had a MoonPie, but they seem like they'd be very similar to me.

Those look pretty similar to me! Obvously Canadian ones are made by pioneers. Which are kind of like moon-men, only not.

I love this story! I have a feeling it's always going to be one of my favorites (of yours). I can't decide whether Jack was having them on from the start (hey, the Doctor's not the only one who lies ;) ), or just about the MoonPies. I don't think it matters to the story either way, though.

I've never had a MoonPie (gasp). I'll comment further at the 6-29-12 post from which you linked me.

Really? A favorite? Better than Myfanwy stories? Better than sexy Welshman? Better than aliens eating Owen? (haven't written that, but you never know).
